Friend Problems

Dear Miss Know It All,

I have a friend that is the same gender as I am. I confessed to liking her. It's been a day since then, and she's switched classes, and has been avoiding me. I know she isn't homophobic because she'd said she was bisexual, but I don't know what to do. I just really want my friend back.

Hey there!

I'm proud of you for having the courage to stand up for your feelings and tell her how you feel. Not everyone is brave enough to do that, and it makes you special. I understand how you feel. It's confusing and hurtful when you tell someone how you feel - especially if they're close to you - and they end up avoiding you and cutting you off. That's harsh. It makes you question yourself, and feel bad about yourself. It's a horrible phase to be in, and I feel you. 

But, it's confusing and scary for the other person too. People react to this situation in different ways, and the most common thing people do is withdraw from the situation because they don't know how to deal with it. Chances are, your friend feels awkward and doesn't know how to respond to your feelings at all, which is why she's avoiding you. It's possible that she isn't able to express her feelings about you, and hence took the easiest way out. 

That's okay. There's no problem we can't solve, right? (Except for alien invasions and asteroids) You need to tell her how you feel. You also need to let her know that it's okay if she doesn't like you back, and that you just wanted her to know how you felt about her. Tell her that you just want things to go back to the way they used to be. If she isn't willing to talk, write her a letter, and stay with her until she reads the whole thing. Communication is key :) 

Don't be disheartened if she rejects you, though. I know, I know, it's easier for me to say from behind a screen than for you who has to get through all these complicated emotions. But, believe me, it'll pass. You're may get rejected by a bunch of people, but you will find the right person eventually and when you do, all the pain will be worth it.
