I'm Lonely

I'm so shy that no one wants to be my friend. I am so lonely. How do I overcome this and be popular again?

Hey there, Lonely Girl!

I'm sure you're an amazing person. But despite that, it's really, really hard to make friends when you're shy - but that's not your fault at all! Your shyness is a mental inhibition that's rather hard to overcome, but I'm not saying you can't :) Do a little self-introspection at first. Why does it scare you to make new friends? 

I understand that it's hard to reach out to people, but step out of your comfort zone occasionally. If you stick to your comfort zone, you're going to stay there forever! Throw yourself into situations that make you uncomfortable (reasonably) one step at a time. If you see someone who looks inviting, try talking to them. You never know what they could offer. You don't have to dive into a deep conversation with every single person that you meet. Maybe start with something small, like saying "hey" to someone in the hallway. You don't even have to say anything, just shoot them a smile!

Have casual conversations in the beginning, and then attempt to bond with someone over time, y'know what I mean? Find things you have in common with the other person -- subjects, TV shows, movies, food, anything.

Even better, try conversing with someone who's just as shy as you -- I know friends who've bonded this way! If you're at a social event (a party or a gathering), keep an eye out for someone who's finding it hard to mingle with people, and go up to them.You'll both be able to relate to each other and communicate well, because both of you know what it's like to want to hide in your shell forever.

Whenever you feel shy, ask yourself what's the worst that could happen. After all, you are talking to a bunch of people (presumably) your age. You're probably really cool, so just wing it and have fun!
