My Parents Might Get A Divorce!

Dear Miss Know It All,

I am typing this email in utter desperation. My parents might get a divorce and I don't know what to do! Please help!

Hey there, Dishevelled Daughter!

Wow. I'm really sorry to hear that. Divorce may be portrayed in movies as totally normal and it looks "easy" to cope with, but reality's entirely different.

Now, I'm not entirely sure of the circumstances due to which your parents are having a conflict, but whatever it is, it seems pretty big. However, know that you're not alone. When I've faced similar circumstances where my parents have had a conflict, I usually make them sit down, and I try to hear both sides of the story, and attempt to call a truce between them. If you have any siblings, that's even better, because the more, the merrier. Keep in mind that when you listen to them, you need to have a very impartial, unbiased view, because you need to think straight, be fair and get a clear idea of who may be in the wrong. Try to gently make them see your and the others' point of view.  This might bring up a little bit of anger on either side, depending on how aggressive your parents are, but it might also work out - think positive.

Another factor a divorce depends on is how strained their marriage is. How long have your parents been fighting for? If they've constantly had differences of opinion for years, then it might be harder to bring them back together. 

Things may not always work out the way you want them to. You gotta hope for the best, but you've also gotta keep the worst in mind. The possibility that your parents might get a divorce still remains. You have to prepare yourself emotionally, so that it doesn't break you completely. If you can, talk to somebody you can trust, maybe a friend who has also gone through a divorce - if it's possible. If you have a sibling, confide in them. Talk about how worried you are, and I'm sure they'd feel the same way.
